BayView State School - Term 2, Week 10
Principal, Mr David Cooke
Good afternoon families
As term two ends, I have been reflecting on semester one focussing on the great work we have been doing in classrooms that has had a positive impact on student engagement, academic achievement and their wellbeing at school.
Academically this semester our school has achieved some important goals. At the beginning of the year, we set some goals for student levels of achievement in English. Through this semester, our staff have interrogated student data, have use formative assessment to guide our how we teach students for success.
This semester 90% of students across the school have achieved at least a C on their report card for English. This has been our goal for the last three years and it is due to the hard work of every staff member that we are having this success.
Additionally, we made have also achieved significant improvement for our students with additional needs and our First Nations students. Our goals were to achieve a 5% increase for students achieving an A-C in English. This semester we have had at least a 7% improvement for both these groups, which means our data is outperforming like schools in the region and like schools across the State.
Given our academic success, I would like to thank all staff for their hard work and determination across the semester and for their willingness to work with each other to find the best strategies to engage our students. To say I am a proud principal is an understatement.
This term we launched our Lighthouse to the staff team. The Lighthouse has been providing support to many students through small group intervention, individual support for school transitions and a chill out space for students who require addition regulation time before going to class. While only relatively new, the Lighthouse is having a huge positive impact on student engagement across the school.
Our students have this term have engaged in a variety of school activities, camps, incursions/excursions - Friday night Touch Football, beginner band camps, choir, sport aerobics and our newly formed Media Academy to name just a few. We offer a wide variety of co-curricular/enrichment opportunities for our students and have plans for more enrichment opportunities as the years progress.
Today we culminate the term with our annual Multicultural Parade, celebrating the many cultures enrolled at Bayview. I would like to thank Mrs Ferrer and Monsieur Sinon for maintaining this tradition and what a huge success today’s event was in celebrating the diversity of cultures that makes our school population.
Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered across the semester in the Café, in reading groups and the Mother’s Day stall. Please consider volunteering at one of our P&C events in semester 2 so that we can continue the many events the P&C have organised to support the students and the school.
Have an amazing break connecting with friends, family and of course your kids. The first week of my break I will be reading books, day trips with the family and continuing my training towards the Bridge to Brisbane 10km later this year. In the second week, I will be in Rockhampton watching my youngest daughter play at the Junior State Cup in Touch Football. I’m sure I will see many families from BayView play in the Redlands rep teams, unfortunately, I will be cheering for the BMTA Mustangs!! If you see me up there, please come and say hello.
Thank you for your support and I’m looking forward to an amazing second half of the year and Go the MAROONS in State of Origin 3.

Deputy Principal, Mrs Shiolan Ferrer
Puggles Playgroup
Our weekly Playgroup, which is held every Thursday, has received a fantastic response! Through story time and play-based learning, children are beginning to build early literacy skills and form positive connections with school life. It’s been a joy to watch our youngest learners grow in confidence and curiosity.
Parade of Nations
Thank you to everyone who joined in and celebrated our Parade of Nations! It was a big success and great to see everyone in costume!
Happy Holidays
As we come to the end of another busy and rewarding term, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support throughout the school year.
As the holiday break is here, I hope you find time to rest, recharge, and enjoy special moments with loved ones. Whether you're travelling or staying local, please take care and stay safe.
We look forward to welcoming our students back refreshed and ready for the term ahead.
Wishing you all a happy, safe, and restful holiday.
Mrs Ferrer

Congratulations to Madison F & Jaz S for being selected in the Met East Softball Team.
In 2025, Queensland families were able to apply for Fair Play vouchers valued at up to $200 to help cover sports and recreation fees for children aged 5 to 17. It has recently been announced that the Queensland Government will continue this program. Keep a look-out for when the new roll-out of the program occurs, most likely in the new financial year.

We wish them all the best as they get together to compete in this amazing opportunity.
This touch football season has been brilliant! BVSS has had so many students and families be involved in a sport that brings people together. Friday afternoons are sublime when you’re at the Redlands Showgrounds watching our little champions play together. The students have grown in their knowledge & skills of the game, as well as learned valuable life skills that are intrinsic to playing team sports. Huge shout out to our parents that turn up to coach, manage, cheer & support all our children – thank you!

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff members who volunteer their time each morning to run our very popular Breakfast Club. Their commitment, warmth, and early starts ensure that our students begin their day with breakfast and a welcoming environment. Thank you for all that you do—your efforts are truly appreciated by students, parents, and staff alike!
Instrumental Music News
Band News
This term, our Year 4 students (Level 1) had an exciting milestone — their first performance as part of a large, combined ensemble at Beginner Music Week! With just one day to rehearse and tackle three completely new pieces, these young musicians rose to the challenge with focus, energy, and enthusiasm. They had the opportunity to be guided by some of Queensland’s most inspiring music educators, making it a truly memorable day.
Looking ahead, our Year 5 and 6 students (Levels 2–3) will have a similar opportunity to collaborate with students and conductors from other schools, at the Intermediate Music Week, in the first week of September. These full-day workshops, organised by the Metropolitan South Region Music Resource Centre, offer a fantastic chance to grow as ensemble players and build confidence in a supportive musical setting.
Meanwhile, excitement is building as both our Junior and Senior Concert Bands prepare to take the stage at the Redlands Eisteddfod! Join us for an evening of music and celebration at 6:00 pm on Tuesday 12 August 2025, at the Lingo Lin Performing Arts Theatre, Ormiston College.
Come along and support our young performers — it promises to be an evening full of talent and school pride!

Late Arrival and Early Departure Procedures
At BayView State School, we strive to minimise interruptions to valuable learning time. While we understand that occasionally students may arrive late or need to leave early, we have procedures in place to ensure their safety and to maintain a smooth school day.
Late Arrival: Any student arriving after 8:30 am is considered late.
Reporting to the Office: If your child arrives late or needs to leave early, please report to the school office.
Early/Late Slip: Office staff will issue an Early/Late slip, which the student must take to their class or present when leaving the school.
We ask for your support in ensuring that these procedures are followed so that all students can arrive safely and on time to their classrooms.
Advising the School of an absence
If your child is absent and you haven't notified the school, you will receive an SMS asking for an explanation of their absence. Please respond on the same day that you receive the SMS.
There are several ways to advise the school of an absence:
Use QParents
Call the student absence line: 3206 5266
Email: absence@bayviewss.eq.edu.au
Please do not send SMS messages unless you are replying to our absence message.
Finance
If you have any finance questions, please contact our Business Manager, Kristin Hill khill313@eq.edu.au or Cara Dyer cdyer44@eq.edu.au. We are happy to help with any queries regarding invoices, payment plans, financial hardship or general student account questions.
Phones Away for the Day
To support students' focus and minimize distractions, all students are asked to sign in their phones at Corporate Services during school hours. This ensures that they can fully engage in learning, build friendships, and remain present throughout the school day.
Administration of Medication
Does your child need medication during school hours?
If your child needs to take medication at school, please provide the office staff with:
- a completed and signed Consent to administer medication form;
- the medication in its original container; and
- medical authorisation (e.g. the pharmacy label, or a letter from the doctor, or a completed and signed health action plan).
For further information, please refer to the Information for parents/carers and health practitioners.
If you have any queries, please contact Corporate Services.
If my child has to take medication at school, how will the doctor know what paperwork the school needs?
When you next visit your child’s doctor (or other health practitioner), you could give them a copy of the Administration of medications in Queensland state schools: Information for parents/carers and health practitioners.
This document explains what advice they need to provide to help the school to safely administer medication to your child.
Easy medication packaging
If your child takes tablets or capsules each day, you can ask the pharmacist to pack them individually in sachets, blister packs or bubble packs. This packaging is known as a ‘dose administration aid’ (or DAA) and has the pharmacy label instructions as part of the packaging.
Medication safety at school
If your child requires medication at school, there are some things you can do to help.
- Only provide medication that has been medically authorised.
- Check that the medication hasn’t expired.
- Provide medication in the pharmacy packaging.
- Hand medication to the school in person.
- Collect unused medication in person.
- Provide a pill-cutter if tablets need to be halved or quartered or arrange for the pharmacist to package the medication using a dose administration aid.
Voluntary Contributions
We invite all parents to participate in our Voluntary Resource Contribution Scheme of $100 per student per year. These valuable contributions directly support the cost of providing a wide range of Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, and Creative Arts resources for our students. Your contribution is greatly appreciated!
QParents Reminder: Digital Consent Management
BayView State School are now using a digital consent management system for all excursions and camps.
Important Reminder:
The digital consent management system will be available starting Term 2.
Families who do not have a QParents account will need to come to the school to collect hard copy consent forms, as these will not be available for students to take home.
We look forward to offering this more efficient and paper-free solution to keep you informed and engaged with your child's school activities.

There will be popcorn, lolly bags, a sausage sizzle, and drinks available for purchase—so bring your picnic blanket, get comfy, and enjoy a night of fun and connection.
PLEASE NOTE: To ensure clear visibility for everyone, we ask that families bring only small picnic blankets (no camp chairs, please). We will have a limited number of seats set up around the sides of the hall for those who may need them.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We can’t wait to see you there!
Warm regards,

School Values
Living Our School Values – At School, At Home, and In the Community
We encourage all members of our BayView community to continue leading by example by modelling our school values every day. These values are not just for the classroom—they are essential in helping our students grow into respectful, responsible, and kind members of society.
How can this look at home and in the community?
Here are a few simple ways families can help reinforce our values beyond the school gate:
Be Inclusive – Embrace and celebrate diversity, encourage friendships with different people, and ensure everyone feels welcome and valued.
Be Respectful – Model polite language, active listening, and thoughtful behaviour—whether at home, in public, or online.
Be Responsible – Encourage children to take ownership of their actions and belongings, help with tasks at home, and develop independence in daily routines.
Be Your Best Self – Support children to set personal goals, try their hardest, learn from mistakes, and be proud of their efforts.
Thank you for continuing to support our students in living these values both at school and beyond. Together, we’re helping them grow into kind, capable, and confident individuals.

Safety Reminder – Modelling Safe Behaviour for Our Students
We would like to remind all parents and carers about the importance of modelling safe behaviours during school drop-off and pick-up times. Our students look to adults for guidance, and we ask for your support in reinforcing the messages we give them at school.
🔸 Cycling and Walking Through Bushland Areas
Please do not ride bikes or e-bikes along the main spine or down to the back car park and avoid walking through bush areas as a shortcut. These paths are not designated for access, and using them sets a poor example for students, who are being explicitly told not to do so.
🔸 Electric Scooters and E-Bikes
For safety reasons, electric scooters and electric bikes should not be brought to school by either students or parents.
🔸 Bicycle Use Near Vintage Drive
At the end of the day, students must not ride their bikes down the pathway toward Vintage Drive.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping to keep all students and families safe — and in modelling the safe, respectful behaviours we expect from our students.
Cafe News

Thank You from the Café Team!
Thank you for supporting the Café throughout Term 2! We wrapped up the term with a busy and exciting day, preparing and serving meals for Multi-Cultural Day—what a fantastic celebration of our diverse community!
We’re grateful for your continued support and look forward to welcoming you back in Term 3.
Have a safe and restful break!
Uniform Shop
Please note our Uniform Shop is open every Tuesday morning between 8.00am and 9.00am.
Please make sure all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child's name, especially jackets — they’re the most commonly misplaced! Labelled items are much more likely to be returned quickly.

Fire Safety
All Queensland homes, including caravans and motorhomes, must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027. These alarms are faster at detecting fires and when one goes off, they all do, giving you more time to escape.
It’s also important to create and practise a fire escape plan with your family. It only takes a few minutes and could save lives.
