Principal, Mr David Cooke
Good afternoon families
We have had a really positive start of the term with a number of events filling our days and nights with examples of the fantastic staff and students we have here at BayView.
Last night I had the privilege to watch our bands and choirs express their musical talents at the Spooktacular. Music and the Arts are an integral part of a well-rounded education. Music is its own language and the ability to read music, then use our brain to convert this into a physical response creating a noise from an instrument takes high level cognition. This in turn has a positive effect on the student’s ability to learn new concepts in their English Maths and other subjects.
Later this term our teachers will be opening the process for instrumental music in 2024 and I would encourage all families to consider this extracurricular activity as an opportunity to enhance not only the functioning of students brains, but to build a love for the arts and music. Thank you, Mrs Ellis and her team of staff who made the night a resounding success and I am looking forward to many more Music and Arts nights.
In week one we held our annual Prep to Year 3 athletics carnival showcasing the talents of our students in the sporting arena. Thank you to Mr Robinson and his team on a really well-run day and thank you to the students who engaged so positively in the events being held. Like music engaging in sport has more benefits than just fitness. Working with a team (collaboration) and also engaging the different part of our brain to bring together multiple complex movement patterns has appositive effect on learning and school and classroom culture.
Staffing
There have been a number of staffing changes this term. This term we have welcomed back Mrs Emma Ditton who returns to the school from a period of maternity leave to take the reins of a year 5 class. Mrs Ditton has been a teacher at BayView for a number of years and has slipped back in seamlessly.
Mrs Hayley Hampton has taken a longer-term opportunity at Dunwich State School on Straddie and in her place for the next four weeks, Mrs Julianne Holzheimer will act as the Deputy Principal in Early years. Mrs Hampton, while only here for a short period of time, has had a positive impact on our school bringing new thinking to our school. I wish her luck with her new role.
Mr Gary Horton our Groundsman has taken a period of leave to see Australia and have a six-month adventure. In his place we welcome Mr Gary Tapper who beings a wealth of knowledge from his many years in Landscaping.
Personally, I would like to thank all our staff for a wonderful start to the term and thank the many parents who have provided such positive feedback regarding the school and their classes. BayView is an excellent school and as we look towards 2024 there are a number of areas where we can make little changes that will have significant impact on students’ outcomes.
Have a great weekend enjoy time with your family and I look forward to seeing you around the school as the year progresses.
David
Deputy Principal, Mrs Shiolan Ferrer
Thank you to all our staff, students and community who attended our 2023 Parade of Nations celebrations.
Several of our staff and students, have been rehearsing for this event since last semester, and it was a fabulous tribute to acknowledge Bastille, NAIDOC, Harmony and Multicultural Day, with this culminating event.
A special thank you to Mr Sinon who supported with the coordination of this event.
With diversity comes unity...and BayView State School certainly had this day last week to celebrate and showcase the many cultures, customs and food of various regions and nationalities that lies within our school.

BRAINways Days of Excellence Program
Nomination letters and permission forms for the Semester 2 BRAINways Days of Excellence were sent home last week. Please ensure the permission form is returned to school no later than Monday 31 August. As spaces at BRAINways fill quickly, it is advisable to register your child online using the information contained in their Nomination Letter as soon as possible. The Chemistry and Philosophy based programs on offer this semester look very interesting, and I am sure our students will enjoy the hands-on nature of these engaging workshops.
What a busy and fun semester of Extension we have ahead!

Gardiner Chess Tournament Merit Award – Nate Horton
At the end of last term, 15 students from Bayview SS competed in the Gardiner Brisbane Logan Chess Tournament at Stretton State College. I recently received news that Nate from Year 6 received a Merit Award, with a score of 5.5/7 on the day. Nate finished in 11th place out of more than 100 competitors which is a wonderful achievement. Congratulations Nate!

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data
All schools in Australia are required to participate in the annual Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on school students with disability. The national data collection counts students who have been identified by a school team as receiving an adjustment to address a disability as defined under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the DDA).
The national data collection collects information about students who are receiving adjustments because of disability across Australia in a consistent, reliable and systematic way. This collection strengthens existing approaches to supporting students with disability and draws on evidence of the ongoing work of teachers and education staff throughout the year to provide personalised learning and support for students with disability. The information collected includes:
- the number of school students receiving an adjustment due to disability;
- the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students;
- the broad category of disability that the student best fits within.
Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. Schools provide this information to education authorities.

Carmel College Year 7 transitions staff information session
Effective transition programs establish positive relationships between the students, parents and educators. Recently, Mrs Potter, one of our Inclusion teachers, had the opportunity to attend a Year 7 transition staff information session at Carmel College. At BayView, we work closely with our surrounding high schools to ensure successful transitions occur by building solid connections across settings and nurturing the confidence of our students to thrive in their future schooling years.

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
This year, the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) will be Friday 18 August. Students can wear orange sun safe clothing to show their support and help raise awareness about bullying prevention. The NDA is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative for schools, encouraging whole-school communities to work together to implement evidence-informed positive and proactive solutions to prevent and address bullying. The NDA is an opportunity to create a shared understanding of what is bullying and show support to students who may be experiencing bullying. This year the NDA theme for 2023 is 'growing connections'. This theme supports research findings that strong school community connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and help enable positive, help-seeking behaviours in students.

Library News, Mrs Julie Carter
Book Fair in the Discovery Centre Week 5!
The Book Warehouse will be sending us containers of books that are samples of the books that will be able to be purchased online.
Classes will all look at the books in their library borrowing time in Week 5. Students will have the chance to write down a 'wish-list' of things they see that they might like and then take that list home. Parents can then order any of the products or any other things that they see online. The books are then sent back to school bundled with the student’s name and we will deliver them to classes.
Parents or Grandparents are welcome to come in and look at the display with the students before school Monday 7th – Friday 11th August and after school till 3.15pm Monday 7th August - Thursday 10th August.
Any books purchased will score reward dollars that we then get to spend on books and resources for the school.
Just a reminder that there are no cash sales available. All orders need to be placed online.
We look forward to a great Book Fair!
PS. Save the date - Monday 4 September is Book Week Dress Up Day. More Information to come.

Sports News
Our Track and Field Carnival is over for another year. Thank you to all parents and staff who supported our students and encouraged them to participate and celebrate a day of competition and sportsmanship! Thank you to the student leaders and leaders without badges for their wonderful involvement and for supporting Mr Beasley and Mr Robinson across both Carnivals. It was an outstanding effort from all houses with participation numbers being well-above the average.
Congratulations to our Age Champion athletes for 2023! Incredibly, the houses these champions represent are very equally spread. What an exciting outcome for the competition between our Sports Houses!
Finally, congratulations to our winning house for 2023... DURBIDGE!
In one of the largest winning margins in Bayview history, Durbidge looks poised for a future of dominance in the Track and Field arena!
Bayside Track & Field Carnival
Congratulations to our Bay View students selected to the Track & Field team to compete at Sheldon College Track on the 3rd & 4th of August.
Training will be held at 7.30am each Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the Carnival.
Queensland State Cross Country Championships
In a historical outcome for Bayview SS, we have our first Individual State Title Medalist & Queensland School Sport Representative, Ellis Beasley.
Ellis came 2nd at last weekends State XC Carnival!

Our school is very proud of Ellis, proof that hard work, passion and dedication gets results! Not to mention his Mum's genes.
If you see Ellis around, please take a moment to congratulate him on this special achievement.
