Principal, Mr David Cooke

Deputy Principal, Mrs Shiolan Ferrer

In week 2, Term 3 on Friday middle session at the hall, we will be celebrating our Parade of Nations, linked to NAIDOC, Harmony, Multicultural and Bastille Day. All family and friends are welcome to attend this parade.

Senior students involved in the Fan Dance will need to wear a long sleeve plain black shirt and plain black leggings.  Could students dancing the Fan Dance, also put their hair up into a high bun with no fringe.  These students will also need to get some plastic coloured beads, which can be purchased at any Reject or Kmart/ Big W shops for around $2.  I will supply the fans and sashes for these students.

The Parade of Nations highlights our school diversity and celebrates multiculturalism at its best.

Any students from P-6, who would like to model their national costume for this day, can contact Mr.Sinon, our French Teacher.

Languages Cluster Day

Recently select students from our Year 6 cohort were invited to attend the Cluster Languages Day. This event, is a joint initiative from all our Cluster Primary Schools and Cleveland District State High School, around promoting and engaging young students in the Languages sector.

These students had the opportunity to engage in language activities with other schools, linked to Jandai, Chinese, Japanese and French. They also got to sample different food from these language areas and watch cultural performances.

Targeted Reading

This year, one of our school's Improvement Agenda initiatives centres on Reading.  We have already commenced, as a whole staff, around active research in the Science of Reading, with our Prep Team and both Deputy Principals attending PLD Training.

Shortly, our Prep Team and cohorts will be involved in introducing PLD- a Synthetic Phonics Program, as part of the Department of Education Queensland's Equity and Excellence Policy in investing in early phonics learning for the early years.

Students in this cohort will continue to learn the simple synthetic code and be introduced to further learning around Phonological and Phonemic Awareness; where specific learning around decoding and learning about sounds in letters and how they are used and manipulated into reading will be taught and learnt.

As part of the school's Targeted Reading initiative, parents often ask classroom teachers, what can they do to help.

Please continue to read books to your children and promote the love of reading through use of environmental print linked to:

  • story books
  • chapter books
  • magazines
  • newspaper articles
  • reading information using digital devices
  • reading labels; instructions etc.

Engage in conversations around their reading, so as to build curiosity, evoke thinking and leading these questions to make children develop ideas, thinking strategies and evoking opportunities for students to reason and evaluate their responses.

Reading is a difficult concept to learn and goes beyond just knowing letters. Reading is a specific skill that requires explicit teaching and  practised regularly, in order for automatic retention.

The love of reading starts in the home and supported through explicit instruction in schools. So please continue to pick up a book or reading article and promote reading, where you can.

Today a reader...tomorrow a leader!

Happy Reading everyone!

Stretton Chess Tournament

On Tuesday, Bayview students ranging from Years 1 - 6 participated in the Gardiner Chess South Brisbane Chess Tournament at Stretton State College.

Our students played seven 20-minute rounds throughout the day, battling against children of differing ages and levels of expertise from more than 20 different schools on Brisbane’s South Side. More than 300 players participated in the event, which proved to be an excellent learning experience for our students who got to meet new friends, challenge their minds, and practise the skills of persistence, patience and resilience.

Two of our teams finished in the top 5 within their division, a remarkable achievement considering some of our students have only taken up chess this year.

A huge thank you to the generous parents who assisted with transportation to and from the competition. Without your assistance, this event would not have been possible. It was a hugely successful tournament and I congratulate all students involved on their wonderful displays of perseverance, problem solving and cooperation.

Chess is a game that anyone can learn and has been linked to better brain function, improved memory and cognitive abilities, strategic thinking and attention improvement. If your child is keen to experience the wonders of chess, tell them to come along to Chess Club, held in the Wellbeing Room in the Multi-age precinct every Monday at first break.
