Deputy Principal News, Mr Akers (Yr 3-6) - Term 1, Week 8
Deputy Principal News - Mr Nick Akers
Hi Parents,
How the term has flown by! We are at the end of Week 8 already. After our brief interruption from TC Alfred, things seem to have settled back into routine. We were lucky, as a school, we suffered minimal damage to our infrastructure, which made it easier for the students to return back and just get on with business.
Overall, we are seeing quite a calm school, with only isolated incidents occurring. Could I please ask that you remind your children to seek out the teacher on duty or their classroom teacher (for classroom incidents) should an incident occur. When we hear about an incident a day or more later, it can become very difficult to get to the bottom of it. I am very happy with how our students are travelling and managing themselves every day. It is nice to see a generally happy and calm group of students going about their day.
You received an email from me a number of weeks ago now, regarding the setup of an online library via the SORA platform for your children. The school has covered the cost for this, and it is a wonderful way to encourage a love of reading. There is something in there for everyone’s interests and is accessible via their iPad or other device at home. The student feedback so far has been wonderfully positive.
Lastly, recently I spoke to the Year 6’s regarding handing in mobile phones. The numbers of phones being handed in grew substantially, then died down again. It is really important that phones are handed in to prevent loss, damage and potential theft, and not to mention it is a school rule. Please remind your child, if they bring a phone to school, they hand it in at the office in the morning, and pickup in the afternoon.
We are on the home stretch now. Thank you for your support this term.

Design Technology Update: A Delicious Learning Experience!
This week, our Grade 3 and 4 students have had an exciting hands-on learning journey in Design Technology! They explored the fascinating process of making yogurt and how it fits into the larger dairy production chain. Through this, they learned key concepts such as “good bacteria,” “probiotic,” and “lactic acid,” which are essential in understanding the science behind yogurt.
To put their knowledge into practice, students investigated how to prepare a safe and delicious dessert—Fruit Compote and Yoghurt Breakfast Cups. After creating the dessert, it was presented to a staff member for a taste test, and the enthusiasm was infectious! In fact, one class was so inspired by how inviting and professional their creation looked that they even discussed the possibility of making and selling it!
It’s been a week full of creativity, learning, and teamwork, with plenty of excitement surrounding how food and science come together in the kitchen. We can’t wait to see what next week brings!
NAPLAN
NAPLAN has finished for another year. Thank you to all students who had a go. It is important to remember that this is simply a point-in-time test and does not reflect the whole picture of your child. We have done our best to reduce stress and anxiety around NAPLAN at a school level, which we believe is an important way to approach it for both students and teachers.
Around the Grounds
In 4 Indigo the students performed a dramatisation of what it might have been like during the first contact between our First Nations people and Europeans.

Below: 4 Indigo students have been investigating what life might have been like in Australia prior to European settlement. Students all collaborated on this artwork to represent a ‘day in the life’ of our First Nations people prior to European arrival.

5/6 Amethyst
This term during Well-being Wednesday, 5/6 Amethyst have been diving deep into research during our weekly Genius Hour. Students were able to choose their own research topic to study. Madison researched and presented how needles work. She even brought in a fake arm and a blunt needle to show the class how the needle is inserted.
5/6 Amethyst have been reading and interpreting data during our statistical maths unit. This week we created questions that required responses like 'sometimes, maybe, never', categories or numbers. Once we had created our own questions, we surveyed the class, and then used the data collected to create graphs and interpret our graphs. Students were so engaged in the whole process.

A Big Thank You to Bakers Delight Thornlands!
This week we had the privilege of welcoming Bakers Delight Thornlands to BayView for their very first visit, and what a special visit it was! They kicked off their support for our school community by generously offering FREE Hi-Fibre Lo-Gi Bread to our students.
This is just the beginning of their amazing generosity, where Bakers Delight will be visiting each class throughout the year to provide healthy and delicious bread, helping to fuel our students and make their day a little brighter.
In these times of rising living costs, it’s heartwarming to see local businesses like Bakers Delight stepping up to support our community. Thank you for your kindness and generosity!
Here’s to many more visits and loaves of bread that will nourish both body and spirit.
