BayView State School - Term 1, Week 3
Principal, Mr David Cooke
Good afternoon, Families
We have had an exceptional three weeks back at BayView with students really transitioning well from holiday mode to learning mode quickly.
Our behavioural values of, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Inclusive and Be Your Best Self, provide an anchor point for how we work with each other to create a wonderful learning community, focussed on continuous improvement for all students.
At our first whole school parade, I spoke to the students about our three focus areas for 2025. While simplistic in its language, the following three areas have a number of strategies staff will be developing and embedding into practice to ensure our trajectory of academic improvement continues this year.
1. A targeted way of teaching reading from Prep to Year 6
- Embedding a consistent approach to Structured Synthetic Phonics for Prep to Year 2
- Implement research-based literacy blocks for Years 3 to 6
2. Ensuring every student is learning and continuously improving in every class
3. The right teaching strategy is used, ensuring all students are engaged in their learning
Student Protection
Our school values strong relationships between students, teachers and parents. It is through these relationships that high quality learning outcomes can be achieved for all of our BayView students.
From time-to-time students will have disagreements before or after school or in the playground. Could I please ask for parents to notify the school through the classroom teacher or the Deputy Principal if this has happened rather than approach students directly.
Approaching students directly will not contribute to finding a solution and in most cases only creates another issue for the student being approached. The school is best placed to handle matters that arise, so I would encourage parents and carers to support your child and then speak with the school to help resolve the issue.
QParents – Digital Consent Management
This year the school will be moving to digital consent management for all excursions and camps. This will mean that parents will be able to provide digital consent and not have to worry about the paper forms being lost at the bottom of the bag or left at school.
Moving to this platform will streamline our internal processes as well as being able to link payment and consent forms in the one platform.
The school will migrate to digital consent management at the beginning of Term 2. Families who do not have a QParents account will need to come to the school to collect hardcopy consent forms as these will not be available for students to take home themselves.
Staffing News
Recently I was offered and accepted the permanent Principal position here at BayView. I have really enjoyed my first two years and would like to thank all the staff for their hard work and determination, evidenced by our continual growth in our students’ academic achievements.
I am really looking forward to what the future will hold for the school and would like to thank Peter Black (Foundation Principal) for the significant contribution he made to the school across the first 13 years.
Thank you for your support at the beginning of the term and I look forward to working with many families across the 2025 school year.
Go the Eels!
David

Head of Department, Mrs Carly Blyth
Our upcoming National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), which will take place from Wednesday 12 March to Monday 24 March.
NAPLAN is a national assessment program that tests students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 in the areas of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and numeracy.
Students will need:
- Fully charged iPad
- Headphones
The results of NAPLAN provide valuable insights into students' progress in these key areas and help to guide teaching and learning at both the individual and school levels. NAPLAN is an important part of the Australian education system, and its purpose is to assess how students are performing in comparison to national standards.
Please refer to the attached links and the following links for further information:

https://education.qld.gov.au/parents-and-carers/school-information/naplan
In class all students will prepare by:
- Building confidence with the online platform
- Becoming familiar with the online tools
- Understanding time management
- Exploring question types and thinking skills
- Participating in online platform practice
At home you can help by:
- Reminding them that tests are normal part of school, and NAPLAN is just another school day
- Keeping a positive attitude about the tests
- Ensuring enough sleep, exercise, and healthy meals.
If you have any questions or need further clarification about NAPLAN, please don’t hesitate to contact Carly Blyth – Head of Department Curriculum cblyt29@eq.edu.au

PE News, Mr Bennett & Mr Ellis
Friday Night Lights - Touch Football
Great job done by our BayView SS Touch teams last Friday! There were lots of explosive breaks, tenacious defensive efforts and team cohesion on display.
Massive thank you to all of the families that are supporting the program with managing and coaching roles.
Run Club
We are up to our 3rd week of Run Club. Runners have been playing fun warm-up games, performing interval jogging training, strength & conditioning, and performing dynamic & static stretching.
We are well into our term 1 mission to cover 1300 kilometres united as a club. So far covering 336 kilometres – almost the equivalent of jogging from Brisbane to Bundaberg.
Run club will be on every Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7.30am and will finish at 8.15am. As it is quite hot and the grass can be quite dewy in the morning, students are encouraged to wear comfortable running attire that is not their school uniform (different shirt, socks and shoes). They can get changed into their school uniforms in the bathrooms after run club. Students will be training for the Cross-Country Carnival which is in week 9 of this term. (Year 4-6 Thursday 27th March, Year P-3 Friday 28th March)
Race distances are listed below:
- Students born 2013, 2014 - 3km
- Students born 2015, Yr4 born 2016 - 2km
- Yr 3 - 1.5km
- Yr 1 and 2 - 1km
- Prep - 800m
Students born 2013 - 2015 that meet the qualifying standards will be eligible to attend the Bayside district trials on Tuesday 7th May.
Local Sporting Clubs
If you are thinking of signing your child(ren) up to play a ‘club sport’, then now is a great time to be looking.
There are lots of sign-on days coming up so check out your local clubs on either the internet or Facebook and get those dates in your diary.
You may like to take advantage of the ‘Fair Play’ vouchers, that provide families with $150 to help alleviate the cost of playing club sport.
Here are some of our local clubs that you may like to investigate:
- Sharks JAFC – Aussie Rules & AUSKICK programs
- Scorpions Softball – T-Ball, Rookie Ball & Junior Softball programs
- Bayside Basketball – Junior Basketball teams. Season has begun; however, they may still offer limited spaces or get in early for the next season.
There are so many clubs available for so many sports along the Redlands Coast. There’s sure to be something out there to suit whatever your child’s interest and skill level is.
Congratulations!
Well done to Maddison S who was invited to attend the Bayside District Basketball Trials on Monday 10th February. Madison performed exceptionally well and was selected as a ‘shadow player’, for the Bayside District Squad. We wish Maddison all the best as she trains with the district playing group and further develops her game.

Phones Away for the Day
As we kick off this year, we want to remind everyone of our “Phones Away for the Day” approach. During school hours, students are asked to sign their phones in at Corporate Services, so they can focus on learning, building friendships, and being fully present when at school.
This helps reduce distractions and ensures students get the most out of their time at school. Let’s work together to make this year a positive and productive one!
Premier's Coding Challenge
The 2025 Premier’s Coding Challenge is NOW OPEN! Students in Years 3–10 are encouraged to showcase their coding superpowers by creating an app, game, or website that drives positive change and addresses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Winners will be awarded amazing coding and robotics prizes and attend a dedicated awards ceremony with industry experts. Find out more: https://qld.gov.au/codingcompetition.

Look before you Lock
Stress, exhaustion and distractions can impact short-term memory, leading to devastating consequences when transporting children.
Look Before You Lock means building a routine of checking to help avoid leaving a child in a car unintentionally. This means checking even if you know your child is not with you.
Make sure to discuss your Look Before You Lock routine with every person who transports your child. This includes partners, grandparents, and friends. Learn more about keeping children safe at www.qld.gov.au/lookbeforeyoulock.
Do you qualify for free Home Internet?
Do you qualify for free home internet to support your child’s education? To ensure all students have equal opportunity for online learning, the Australian Government has extended the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) to continue free NBN broadband access until 30 June 2028. There are limited places available nationally. For more information or to check your eligibility, please contact the National Referral Centre on 1800 954 610 or visit http://www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet.
