Principal, Mr Cooke

Good afternoon families

We have had a wonderful start to the term with students transitioning extremely well from holiday mode to learning.  Our classrooms are settled and the energy across the school is very positive.  As I walk through classrooms, the students are very proud to show me the work they are doing and as I have had conversations with teachers, overwhelmingly they tell me that students are putting in the effort daily to their learning.

Earlier this year, the Minister for Education recognised that there is an additional week of student attendance in the school year (ie this year has 41 weeks of student attendance while the student school year is generally 40 weeks in duration).

The Minister and the department have advised schools that they will be supported in running an alternative program for students in the last week of the school year.

While our school will remain open to students for the last week of the school year (9 - 13 December), we are currently developing a program that will provide teachers with release time to develop and co-construct high impact units and rich learning opportunities for students aligned to the new curriculum for 2025.

To enable this, all formal classes, year six graduation, STAR awards ceremony and classroom party day celebrations etc will be completed in week 10 of this term (2-6 December) and an alternative program for students will run in last week of the school year.  To assist with our planning for week 11 and also the 2025 school year, every parent will receive a letter seeking information about whether your child will be attending in week 11 and also if you will be returning to BayView in 2025.  Please return this by Friday October 25.

On Friday 25 October, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day and I would like to thank all the wonderful teachers we have in the school for their effort across the year with their classes, as well as working through many of the changes that have been implemented this year.  Having been at several school in my 25 years of teaching, I can safely say that the professionalism and care that all our teachers have towards their students and the school is amazing.

Over the last two weeks we have been welcoming our new preps for 2025 to the school alongside their parents.  This has led me to reflect on this year and the progress our prep students have made this year.  This year has been our first full year of implementation of a Structured Synthetic Phonics program in prep which has also been rolled out through our year 1 and 2 classrooms as well.  Pleasingly the introduction of SSP into these year levels has produced significant growth in the percentage of students achieving an A or B in English as well improved percentages for students achieving at least a C.  I am excited to see how this benefits our teachers in the upper years as the years progress.

Our swimming program will begin in the next two weeks, and I would like to acknowledge and thank the P&C for continuing to raise money through the colour run which allows us to provide a two-week swimming program for a very reduced fee.  The fee for the program represents a 50% reduction in cost to parents through this fundraising.  Thank you to Bree Tesch for her work every year in ensuring a great event for our students while also raising much needed funds for the swimming program.

Have an amazing weekend everyone and good luck to the Jillaroos and the Kangaroos tonight as they play their first international games against PNG and Tonga tonight.

Guidance Officer, Mrs Robinson

A change we have made this year is to formalise support for our external agencies. We, as a team, are here to support your family in any way we can. However, teachers are very busy and sometimes have had to complete forms out of school hours and on school holidays.  To assist in this space, we have attached our new process for Information sharing or assessment for External Agencies. There are two forms that need to be completed and signed. The first form is Request for Information, and the second is permission for the school to contact outside agencies.

Our policy is to give the school team 4 weeks’ notice. This allows us to collaborate and make sure we have all the facts required by your specialist. Both forms can be collected at Corporate Services. Once the forms have been completed, I will then process and pass the information on to the classroom teacher. Please do not give your child’s teacher a form from a specialist or allow your specialist to send a link. Education Queensland only allows staff to complete paper copies of assessments.

The forms required are linked below and are also available at Corporate Services.

2024 Cluster Schools' Steam-athlon

On Wednesday 9 October, two teams of Year 6 students from BayView participated in the Cluster Schools' Steam-athlon, competing against teams from Ormiston, Cleveland, Manly, Alex Hills, and Thornlands.

The Bayview teams included Harmannat, Marlow, Maxwell, Hunter, Evie, Rory, Taylor, and Mackenzie. They tackled four exciting challenges: Maths, Engineering, Performance, and Research.

Each participant should be incredibly proud of their efforts, as both teams represented BayView wonderfully and excelled in all challenges!

1 Lime

What a busy start to Term 4! 1 Lime has gotten straight into our learning and have begun retelling lots and lots of stories! We are reading a new story every week and writing about it. If you're reading at home, please ask your child to tell you what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story. We've been too busy learning to stop to take photos yet, but I'm sure we'll have more pictures to share as the term goes on!
