Principal, Mr Cooke
We have had an eventful start to the term with Athletics, Sport Aerobics and Cluster sports days all in the first three weeks.
I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the staff and the students in semester one. As a school, we have set high expectations for our whole school English data and in semester one we have achieved on key aspect. This year we identified that our goal was for 50% of students to achieving an A or B in English and 90% achieving a C or better. The table below shows our current data profile. Pleasingly we have exceeded our expectations in our A-B data, however our C or better data has remained at the same level from Semester 2 2023.
Maintaining our C or better data is pleasing, as generally schools will have an achievement dip in semester 1 due to the increased demands of the new year level. As we continue to review and embed new practices across our year levels, our expectations for semester two would be that we will achieve our whole school target of 90% C or better in English.
Excitingly the greatest improvement for our school has been in the prep to year two-year levels. Whilst there are many reasons for this spike in data there is a significant correlation between English level of achievement and the structured synthetic phonics pedagogy we have implemented. Our staff have worked very hard in implementing this strategy and the evidence of its value is seen through Semester one reporting.
Whole School - C or better target 90% | 86% |
Whole School A/B target 50% | 53% |
This week at the P&C meeting I shared the executive summary from our recent School Review. I have attached the summary to this newsletter for your perusal and would be happy to answer any question you may have. The whole process has been an affirmation of the really great work that all our staff are undertaking at the moment while also providing us with some recommendations for our future work.
This term our staff will be engaging with the full review report and using this to collaboratively build our four-year strategic plan. I am also seeking parent involvement in the construction of this plan and if you would like to register your interest please click on this link. https://forms.office.com/r/TWhAzzVD0f
Congratulations to all students who were presented with their age champion medals this week and it was fantastic to see the competition was extremely close with multiple shared honours with one year level having three students earn age champion status.
I am looking forward to next week's Biggest Morning tea and hope to see as many families at the event as possible. Last year we had an amazing turn out, with the students really enjoying having their families eat with them at school.
Finally, I would like to put a call out for volunteers to come forward to assist with many of the events that the Parents & Citizens Association manage throughout the year. The P&C are unfortunately at risk of not being able to run a number of events due to our current volunteers work commitments and them having students in grade six and leaving at the end of this year. If you have some time available, please make contact with the P&C team through their Facebook site and register your interest.
Have a great weekend and I have my fingers crossed the Wallabies can get another win and our Olympic Athletes can win gold.

Victoria Point State High School Open Day for BayView Students - 2 October 2024
This open day is designed to give the students the opportunity to:
- Meet the Principal and the Year Level Lead teacher;
- Meet the Senior Peer Leaders that will be working with the Year 7 students next year, and will become their buddies;
- Make some new friends from other schools;
- Tour the campus and be shown key buildings and their purpose;
- Try out our Academy Programs and see if any of them spark their interest (Dance Academy will audition on this day)
- Experience some high school subjects like Home Economics, Industrial Technology and Design and Business.
The purpose of Orientation Day is to help dimmish the nerves and provide our new high school students with confidence, when they walk through the gates on their first day at VPSHS in 2025. Parents dropping off and picking up their students will then have the opportunity to meet some of the teachers and administration staff and will be able to ask any questions that they might have.
Please see link below for more details.

External Therapy Requests
From time to time, parents & carers may request the collaboration of staff from BayView State School with external therapy providers to help support the educational and wellbeing needs of students. This request needs to be initiated by the parents. Request forms need to be completed by parents/carers and external providers requesting a visit. A member of the school team will contact parents/carers once the school team has considered the request.

Celebrating Success: Grade 6 Fuse Cup Team Wins National Minecraft Coding Challenge!
We are thrilled to announce that our Grade 6 Fuse Cup Team has emerged victorious in the national Minecraft Coding Challenge, competing in the primary school division. Notably, our school was the sole representative from a state school to achieve this prestigious honour.
Under the guidance or Miss Murphy, our talented students Isaac, Jayden, Ryan, Oliver and Dylan and the critical feedback from our year 5 world testers Iverson, Cooper, and Jordan, our team demonstrated exceptional creativity and technical skill in this competitive event.
This achievement not only highlights their proficiency in coding and Minecraft gameplay but also showcases their collaborative spirit and determination to excel in a national arena.
Congratulations to our Grade 6 Fuse Cup Team for their outstanding performance and for bringing this accolade to our school community. Your hard work and achievement serve as an inspiration to us all.

Guidance Officer, Mrs Robinson
A change we have made this year is to formalise support for our external agencies. We, as a team, are here to support your family in any way we can. However, teachers are very busy and sometimes have had to complete forms out of school hours and on school holidays. To assist in this space, we have attached our new process for Information sharing or assessment for External Agencies. There are two forms that need to be completed and signed. The first form is Request for Information, and the second is permission for the school to contact outside agencies.
Our policy is to give the school team 4 weeks’ notice. This allows us to collaborate and make sure we have all the facts required by your specialist. Both forms can be collected at Corporate Services. Once the forms have been completed, I will then process and pass the information on to the classroom teacher. Please do not give your child’s teacher a form from a specialist or allow your specialist to send a link. Education Queensland only allows staff to complete paper copies of assessments.
The forms required are linked below and are also available at Corporate Services.

1 Lime
What a fantastic start we have had to the term! We ended our first week back to school with celebrating our one hundred and first day of Year One! The children all did an outstanding job of counting and sorting different things into collections of 100 + 1!
Last week we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Tooth Fairy who is currently at school with the Tooth Fairy dental van. The children all had a go a showing off their brushing skills and sorting foods into sometimes foods and always foods.
We have a jam-packed term ahead with some very exciting planning underway for events such as our Book Week celebrations in Week 9. This year's theme is 'Reading is Magic' so start planning your costumes now!

EXPLORE THE MUSEUM
......to discover the science that makes things work!
Join us at Redland Museum for an unforgettable exploration into the science that makes things work.
Mark your calendars for Monday, August 12th, as Redland Museum once again hosts its highly anticipated Switch on to Science day, coinciding with National Science Week. This special event promises a fascinating journey through the inner workings of vintage machinery, brought to life by our dedicated team of volunteers.
Switch on to Science is an interactive experience where you can operate and interact with a diverse array of historical equipment. Discover the underlying scientific principles that have shaped technological advancements over the decades. Whether you're young or young at heart, this event offers a unique opportunity to learn through hands-on exploration and play.
Ross Bower, the museum’s science coordinator, explains the appeal: "Vintage machines are ideal for illustrating scientific concepts because of their simplicity compared to their modern counterparts. They offer a tangible way to grasp how science influences our world. Plus, they're incredibly entertaining to engage with."
While Switch on to Science primarily targets the curious minds of youngsters, there's something for everyone. Parents and grandparents will find plenty to captivate them, whether reliving fond memories or discovering new marvels alongside the younger generation.
Don't miss this chance to ignite your curiosity and deepen your appreciation for the science all around us. Join us at Redland Museum for a day filled with exploration, discovery, and the joy of learning through history and technology.
