Deputy Principal, Shi Ferrer
Welcome to our 2024 School Year!
This term our middle years sector are busily working on building their leadership capabilities with our 2024 student leaders, learning to know their roles and working with each other on implementing student-led projects within the school. Presently, we have the first official Cultural Awareness Student Leadership Day, where our school captains and Barna Jarjum leaders and champions will visit Dunwich State School, to learn and walk on Country. Other schools within our Redlands cluster, will also partake in this collaboration where student leaders, will connect with Elders around raising awareness as First Nation student leaders.
These learnings in turn, will pave our Jarjum leaders to implement activities to help with NAIDOC Week; along with building connections during one of the lunch breaks, where our students create their Acknowledgement to Country and also leading in student-led art works with and for their peers. All permission forms for the Cultural Awareness Student Leadership Day is due to Corporate Services.
The rest of our 2024 Student Council Leaders will also be participating in the Grip Leadership Program and also Cluster Leadership Day. All engagement opportunities to help the leaders of today, become the leaders of tomorrow! Please ensure to submit all permission and medical forms to Corporate Services.
The 2024 Investiture Parade will be held on Friday-Week 4 at the Hall from 9am.
All family and friends are welcome to attend. This parade celebrates our incoming Yr 6 student leaders, where they officially receive their badge & leadership certificates.
Rehearsals have commenced last week and will continue until next week for our student leaders.
Leadership goes beyond a title or badge...instead, our young leaders of today are learning to put themselves out there, to think creatively in building connections with their peers, using critical thinking skills to design and navigate projects and being visible to their peers so as to form positive connections!

Inclusive education:
- The Department of Education partners with the Community Resource Unit (CRU) to provide free workshops, individual consultations and resources to support families to continue to be valued partners in their child’s education. Families can access details on the CRU website about the Families for Inclusive Education Project. The attached flyer outlines activities available for families in Term 1, 2024, including free workshops at the Gold Coast, Mackay, Townsville, Caboolture, and online.
- Families can apply to CRU for funding to assist their travel and accommodation where workshops are not being held close to home for them.
- Under this project, CRU also provides advice and information about inclusive education to education professionals who contact them. Workshops regarding effective engagement from a parent perspective will also be offered in each region across 2024 for school and regional staff.

Classroom News
2 Lavender
We have had a wonderful start to the year in 2 Lavender, our bonds are growing, along with our responsible and respectful choices both inside and outside of the classroom. We have been creating a variety of learning opportunities inside, outside, individually and in small groups to keep the learning fun and interesting.
Our focus in English has been around building character descriptions and digging deeper into a character’s appearance (outside) and personality (inside) which found us having a walk around the school to take a moment to explore what our school looks like, sounds like and feels like.
In Maths we have been focusing on learning and supporting others in small groups while skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, creating patterns and exploring place values.
As a class we reached our PBL goal of 120 tokens and celebrated with an afternoon of making slime. The students absolutely loved this as they watched their slime change with the temperature of their hands and created new colours as they mixed primary colours together.

Guidance Officer, Julie Robinson
The last couple of weeks we have seen our preps settling into routine and our other students settle into their new classrooms with new teachers. This year Glenys Muller (Our School Psychologist) and I plan to run some parenting workshops around resilience, anxiety and behaviour in term 2 and 3. If there is something you are particularly interested in please let us know. We are aware that in some families, both parents work, so if you would like some parenting workshops outside of school hours it is certainly something we can consider. The playroom is up and running with lots of children accessing this space at lunch time.
One other change we have made this year is to formalise support for our external agencies. We, as a team, are here to support your family in any way we can. However, teachers are very busy and sometimes have had to complete forms out of school hours and on school holidays. To assist in this space, we have attached our new process for Information sharing or assessment for External Agencies. There are two forms that needs to be completed and signed. The first form is Request for Information and the second is permission for the school to contact outside agencies.
Our new policy is to give the school team 4 weeks’ notice. This allows us to collaborate and make sure we have all the facts required by your specialist. Both forms can be collected at Corporate Services. Once the forms have been completed, I will then process and pass the information on to the classroom teacher. Please do not give your child’s teacher a form from a specialist or allow your specialist to send a link. Education Queensland only allows staff to complete paper copies of assessments. The forms required are attached to this newsletter and available at the office.

PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning
Students have been excited to welcome in our new Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) reward system. Each class have been busy collecting tokens and working together for individual, class and a whole school rewards.
We asked some students what they thought of the new system.
"It's great and awesome because it's easier to achieve and they can never be taken away from you" - Archie, Year 3
"I got nine today. I really want to get ten tomorrow." - Sienna, Year 5
"I have ten tokens today so I will get a prize!" - Jevyn, Year 3
Have your children been talking about our new PBL reward system? If you would like to give feedback, or join our PBL parent community, please contact Sabrina Tully at stull20@eq.edu.au or Megan Hunt at mwarr56@eq.edu.au.

School zone safety – advice for motorists, parents and carers
With school back for 2024, we need to keep safety top-of-mind when travelling through active school zones and around our school community.
School zone times have been standardised in Queensland to help motorists remember when to slow down. The standard operating times for most school zones in Queensland are 7–9am and 2–4pm, with some operating all day between 7am–4pm.
Speeding remains a significant concern, contributing to fatalities and injuries, and police will be on the lookout for speeding motorists. Keeping below the signed speed limit in school zones helps keep everyone safe. This simple adjustment may have minimal impact on travel time but has the potential to significantly contribute to saving lives.
Children's crossings are identified by children's crossing flags, displayed near crossings before and after school hours.
When the crossing is supervised, you, as a motorist, must:
- Wait until all pedestrians, bicycle riders, or personal mobility device riders have crossed the road and the crossing supervisor has returned to the footpath.
- Abide by the direction given by the School Crossing Supervisor.
Please keep our children safe by staying alert, slowing down and obeying our school crossing supervisors who are there to help kids cross the road safely.
You can also help children become more road safety aware by:
- Showing them how to look for vehicles coming in and out of driveways and discourage them from playing behind parked cars, or with toys or balls when walking to school.
- Ensuring your child knows the safest route to and from school. This is usually the way with the least traffic and the fewest roads to cross and teach your child to always walk on footpaths.
- Showing your child how to cross at traffic lights when the green 'walk' sign is showing at pedestrian crossings when vehicles have stopped and at supervised school crossings when the supervisor has signalled it is safe to do so.
- Accompanying children when walking or riding to school until they are old enough to understand road safety (usually around 10 years or older).
- Teaching your child if they catch the bus to never cross in front of or behind a bus; wait until the bus goes before crossing the road.
- Making sure wheeled devices (bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or rollerblades) used to travel to school are well maintained and that the appropriate protective and safety gear (for example, helmet, visible clothing, knee and elbow pads) are used.
Visit the Street Smarts website for more information about what to do at pedestrian and children crossings.
