Principal, David Cooke

Good afternoon families

It has been a very big two weeks here at BayView.

This week we had our annual basketball game followed by the B Factor event.  Both of these events were a lot of fun for the whole school and was well supported.  I don’t think my hamstrings have recovered from the high kicks during Mr Robinson, Mr Bennett’s and my sports aerobics performance!

On Tuesday we held our annual STAR awards and it was a perfect end of year parade where we celebrated the many achievements of our students in the sporting, cultural, academic and environmental aspects of the school.  As I reflected on the parade, I believe we have an opportunity to further develop our range of awards to include the whole school.  I will be working with staff and students through the year to look for how we can achieve this in 2024.  At this parade we also celebrated the staff who are leaving our school at the end of the year.

Four of our leaving staff have been with the school community since the very beginning if the school and I would like to publicly thank Vikki Lord, Norelle Thomas, Julie Carter and Kristie Jones for their service to the school not only in the academic aspects but for their contribution to the culture of the school that we see on show every day of the year.

We unfortunately will also be without Glen Robinson and Rochelle Caruso who have been transferred to Scenic Shores State School for 2024.  Their work has been extraordinary and their contribution to the learning environment and culture of our school is evident in their classrooms and the high esteem their students have for them.  Ms Ollerenshaw will also be moving back to her school at Mount Cotton and I would like to thank Mrs O for her work across the school over many years as well as having a huge impact of the students who require support due to English being their second language.

Finally, we also said goodbye to Kelli Franklin who has moved to the new school in Redland Bay for 2024.  Kelli has provided many years of fun and service to the school.  Her work in the corporate services area of the school is impeccable and many of our families will miss her smiling face as they come to collect kids early.

Wednesday night we held our Graduation evening and  we said goodbye to our graduating class of year sixes.  Thank you to Mrs Ruth Brown and the year six team for their work in creating a wonderful celebration of the student’s time at BayView.  The feedback from our parent group has been appreciated and I know that as I have spoken to the students, they were very thankful for the effort that was put in to make the night happen.

This year our staff have worked extremely hard in further enhancing their understanding of the Australian Curriculum while also developing new assessment instruments and marking criteria for English.  Through this work and our focus on implementation of a new way of teaching reading in the prep classes which will extend to the whole school in 2024 and whole school moderation processes.

We have seen significant growth in our percentages of students achieving an A – C in English. This improvement is reflected across all year levels and I would like to thank all our staff for the part they have played in ensuring every student is able to achieve to the best of their ability.

I wish every family at the school a happy summer holiday and hope that you are able to spend a lot of time with family and friends as we usher in a new year.

I have had a fantastic year at BayView and have been privileged to be asked to continue in my role in 2024 while Peter is still on leave.

Deputy Principal, Shiolan Ferrer

A big shout out to 6A and Mrs Brown, for supporting this year's Secret Santa Appeal.

Personally, I want to thank Mrs Brown and her class for embracing the Targeted Writing Program, and engaging in the power of writing for a common good.  I also want to acknowledge other teachers, like Miss Labuschagne and Ms Schuster, who also supported this initiative in our previous years, in participating in this worthy cause.

Sometimes, it takes one act of kindness to shift and move mountains for others.

2023 has been a big year of change and lots of amazing achievements has been had throughout this year.

Many thanks to our wonderful students, who across P-6 has experienced many firsts, such as our little people learning to attend 'big school', as our Prep students would call it. Seeing them learn how to read, write and learn our PLD program, has already shown great progress, this year.

We had our Year 4 students attend camp for the first time, and steers them into attending the senior camps, in preparation for their future leadership journey as future senior students.

To all our 2023 Year 6 students, who will now venture into High School...congratulations on reaching this milestone of completing primary school...we all wish you the very best for the future and look forward to seeing you visit BayView, whose doors will always be open to welcome you back, only to hear the amazing achievements you will make in the future.

To our incredible staff...words can't express the passion, dedication and hard work, you put into your profession and our school. Thank you so much for your commitment and always having our students at centre of what you do as educators; and to our Leadership and Corporate Services Team, many thanks for your tireless efforts and leading with a vision.

May you all have a wonderful festive break. Many thanks to our community who has supported our BayView Cares Program, Secret Santa Appeal and International Stationery Appeal.

I will be heading to the Philippines this festive season, and will be distributing the stationery items donated by our school, to a local school in Manila, where access to basic stationery items, is to not always readily accessible.

Thank you for this act of kindness! Not only does BayView reflect a community that cares, but we also foster this in the wider local community and globally, to show our students, that they all make a difference!

Keep safe and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

See you all in 2024!

ICT Classes

Some of our classes have been working on their photography and digital drawing skills the last few weeks during their ICT lesson. They have explored focus, lighting and perspective. There were many examples of outstanding work across all of the classes and their enthusiasm was contagious.

Music News

This has been another fantastic year in the Creative Arts here at BayView. Our wonderful band students performed some very ooky spooky music at this year’s Spooktacular, have performed for their peers on parade and competed in the Redlands Eisteddfod with great results. Our Seniors received 2nd Place and our Juniors received Highly Commended in a very competitive category. Finally our Junior’s received 1st Place in the South-East Region’s Principal’s Challenge with Mr Cooke accompanying them on the Eb Tuba.

Here’s to another fantastic next year in 2024!

Prep Purple

As they near the end of their first year at school, Prep Purple have been reflecting on their time at school; the things they have learnt, the friends they have made, and the fun we have had together. Students also thought back to their very first day of Prep and recalled the feelings they had on that day.

So, we decided to write some messages to next year's Preps that their teachers will share with them on their first day. We hope that the 2024 Prep cohort will feel welcomed and reassured that they are in a wonderful place to start their learning journey.

Cafe News

We would like to thank you the school community and staff for all your support with ordering Café and coffee this year. We had a mammoth 508 orders for the pizza party yesterday and what a effort from all parties to pull that together, and it ran so well with the support we had.

We also want to make a special mention to Brendan Key, Barbara Bou-Samra and Heidi Meininger as their kids go off to high school and we bid them farewell. It has been an absolute pleasure working with you all over the years . Your generosity, fun bubbly natures, kind, caring ways and support at Café have been exceptional.

Brendan you have been here since the school opened and Barb since your boys started prep. The number of hours you have put into volunteering over the years would be hard to measure.  Amongst your busy lives you have remained dedicated to the school and to the Café.   Heidi, while you are only new to the school this year you have jumped in to help from the start and become one of the Café crew, taking on anything we throw your way with a smile!  You have all been an integral part of our team and we are going to miss you dearly.

A truly great volunteer is hard to find , difficult to part with and impossible to forget.

To our other amazing volunteers, Anita, Katrina, Lisa, Pam, Chrissy, Nicola, Tiana and Kara, and our special guest appearances Leanne,  David and Mr Beasley - Thank you from the bottom of our hearts , you make everything we do at Café possible . Without your support we would not be able to run as efficiently and as well as we do .
