Principal, David Cooke
Good afternoon BayView community,
I am in total disbelief that it is already week 6 and the end of term is fast approaching.
This hit me on Monday this week when my 17-year-old daughter completed her final year 12 exam, ending her 13 years of schooling. This year seems to have gone by so fast and it unbelievable that we are in the final assessment weeks and reporting will start soon.
Last weekend I had the pleasure of working with Mr Bennett and 24 or our year six students at the Queensland Primary All Schools Touch competition. Both teams have trained all term in preparation and were a credit to our school with some really great results.
Our girls team won their first 4 games and were placed into the highest division for finals day and played a great game against All Hallows. The team they played have been together all year and regularly play in the Thursday night competition at BMTA. Unfortunately, the girls went down 1-0 in the final 30 seconds however had opportunities throughout the game to go to the front themselves.
The boys came up against stiff opposition in the round games and went into finals day in the plate division with only one win. The boys gelled well for the final day and won their first two games making the semi-final stage. Unfortunately, the boys were beaten by Redland Bay 5-3 however fought hard to the end.
Thank you to Mr Bennett for his work over the course of this term and the weekend in very trying conditions and thank you to Alana Cutler for your assistance with the girls teams.
Over the last few months, we have been witnessing an increase in the use of technology messaging apps to harass and bully. All of this communication is happening across the weekend and in times that the students are not at school. Could I ask that parents and carers regularly check the online conversations in all messaging apps randomly to see that the content shared is appropriate. In recent weeks, the content has been quite explicit and has caused significant anxiety for students attending school and in some cases the content can and should be referred to the police.
I have included a link to the e-safety website which has resources, tips for setting restrictions and other information related to safer internet use. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents
Recently there has been several students who are sitting unsupervised in the school prior to 8.00am. Some of these students are here as early as 7.30am. We have a well resourced and staff OSHC who provide supervision for student prior to the start of the school day. If you require information for enrolling you students, please see Corporate Services for more information.
The Department of Education is providing a platform for schools to allow parents to give digital consent for excursions. Unfortunately, it does not make practical sense for us to move this way until at least 95% of our families have signed into QParents. If we are able to use the digital consent management program, this will reduce our environmental impact while also not having notes hidden in the bottom of the bag and not seeing the note until the day of the excursion.
I will ask our Corporate Office staff to send another link to see if we can hit my goal of 95% by the end of the year. Once you have joined this system, you will remain linked in QParents when you transition to any state education facility. If you are attending Cleveland DSHS, I know they are also moving down the digital consent management line.
Swimming has started and it has been great to see kids smiling and having fun while also learning how to stay safe in the water as we move towards the summer swimming season. The change to Thornlands State School pool has been positive and we are looking to make this a more permanent solution to our swimming program.
Have a great week everyone!
David

They say, "tis the season to be jolly....and most importantly, sharing in the wisdom of charity and showing care and compassion!"
Please see reminders below, around some of the Wellbeing and Community Partnerships we are working on, to make someone's day, a better one- through the act of kindness.
International Compassion Project Appeal
This year, we will be donating stationery items to students in a low socio-economic school in Manila, the Philippines. Please send through any un-used stationery items to our Admin area. There is a table set up, for those who wishes to donate any items, for students who are lacking in receiving the basic essentials for a good education.
Donations provided by BayView State School, will help support students overseas, who are have limited means to access school supplies, due to poverty. Every little item helps, in making the world a better place.
Maraming salamat po sa mga donations ninyo! Thank you everyone for your donations.
Star Community-Secret Santa Appeal
6A is presently working along side Star Community Services and BayView around giving back to our elderly people, during the festive season.
Links around promoting our students to engage with targeted writing, through connecting with the community, is a highlight around encouraging our students to participate in active citizenship and making a difference through their writing!
Please help to support this cause by donating non-perishable items.
BayView Cares Program
As part of our tradition, we are also running our annual BayView Cares Program. Donations can be placed under the school's Christmas tree in Corporate Services.
Donations of both, non-perishable gifts, food items and toys, will go directly to our own families and community of BayView State School.
Thank you to our P&C and Wellbeing Framework Team who are working alongside each other, in supporting our families, students and staff!
Sometimes, it's the little things that makes a difference, and together...we can make an impact by sharing kindness with each other, and showing our students, that they do and can make a difference, by caring for oneself and each other.
Thank you everyone for all your donations and continuing to support these worthy projects and initiatives.

On Tuesday 31 October, a group of students from BayView represented our school at the Brisbane Primary South Inter-School Chess Tournament at Calamvale Community College. Run by Gardiner Chess, this was an individual competition for students ranging from Prep through to Year 12 from all over Brisbane.
With more than 500 competitors in attendance, our students performed exceptionally well and did us proud, demonstrating wonderful sportsmanship, perseverance, and resilience throughout the day.
We have not received any information yet as to the final placings or prizes awarded during the adjudication process but will bring you these details as they become available.
A very big thank you to those parents who were able to transport their children to and from the event. Without your assistance, this day would not have been possible.
I look forward to many more exciting learning opportunities in our extension and enrichment program over the next few weeks. Thank you for your support.

Sports News
On Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of November, students from Bayview competed at the Queensland Primary All Schools Touch competition. This year, over 200 teams from across the state competed. There were 78 boys teams, 74 girls teams and 52 mixed teams competing across the three days. Bayview entered a girls and boys team in the competition.
The girls team finished at the top of their pool with 4 wins. This earned them a spot in the Championship Finals division on Sunday which placed them amongst the top 16 girls teams in the state. Unfortunately, they went down 1 – 0 to All Hallows in the first knock-out round.
The boys team placed 4th in their pool with 1 strong win and three narrow losses to some very strong teams. Two dominant wins got the team through to the Semi-Finals of the Bowl Finals division.
Thank you to Mr Cooke and Alana Cutler for their assistance in coaching and managing both teams.

Music News, Amy Ellis
Senior Dance Concert
Wow, what a show! It was fantastic to see our Year 4, 5 and 6 students performing their hearts out on-stage. You may have mentioned to your families and friends how well your child danced, and yes, they danced amazingly. But did you consider everything they did that evening?
- How they remembered all their body actions, facial expressions, the order of the movements and entries/exits.
- How they were aware of not only their own position on stage but also the location of other dancers.
- How they were constantly counting and trying to stay in time with the music.
- How they utilised the wings and curtains.
- How they decided how much energy to use with each action.
- How they pushed through their nervousness.
- How they worked as a team.
- How they encouraged each other to do their best.
- How they performed in costuming.
- How they handled their props.
- How they performed with bright lighting in their eyes.
- How they lead their line or group.
- How they sang while dancing.
- How they had the courage to take on a solo part.
- How they managed their time – when to arrive, use the bathroom, change into a new costume.
- How they used dance to communicate and express meaning.
- How they reflected on their performance to develop and improve in the future.
- How they challenged themselves.
Your child didn’t just ‘Dance’, they did all of the above and more.
It’s not just a concert. It’s a huge learning experience in more ways than you may have thought. Like all Art forms, Dance has the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students, exciting the imagination and encouraging students to reach their creative and expressive potential. Congratulations dancers!
