BayView State School - Term 4, Week 3
Principal, Mr David Cooke
Term four has started really positively with students settling into the school routine well. I am amazed at how quickly the year has gone and that we are only 7 weeks away from the next school holidays. The fact that we are so close to the summer break means that there are some busy times ahead for our staff, students and families.
Our annual swimming program will begin in week five with each class swimming for 8 days. With the change of venue this year and a significant fundraising effort last year from the colour run we have been able to reduce the cost of the swimming program to half of last year’s cost. I would encourage all students to attend as this time spent in the water will provide an added confidence to every student as we move into the swimming season and beach weather.
Last week we held our school colour run with perfect weather and a explosion of colour. Thank you firstly to Bree Tesch who once again organised a excellent event, coordinating a great turn out of volunteers as well as managing the fundraising portal. This year we were able to raise more than we did in 2022 with the money once again earmarked for the 2024 swimming program. I am still washing colour off myself and following my sliming on Tuesday, I still have slime stuck in my ears and up my nose.
Last Thursday, we hosted our annual Senior Dance night. During the evening, the year four, five and six students showcased the dances they have been learning with Ms Ellis in their music lessons. The showcase forms part of the assessment of the students and I was amazed with the choreography and talent of the students. Firstly, I would like to thank Ms Ellis for her hard work to put together the night and also the many teachers who volunteered to assist with supervision during the evening and of course a huge thank you to our clown of an MC who kept everything on track.
This term we have been hosting our 'Get Ready for Prep' sessions with over 90 students attending classes with our prep teachers and a huge number of parents learning from our staff about the school and what we are trying to achieve. Currently we have 111 Preps enrolled for 2024 and I would expect across this term the number will increase as families move into the area. If you know of families who are in catchment, who are yet to enrol, please encourage them to do so as soon as possible.
As the school is increasing in numbers year on year, we are starting to look at additional facilities for the school to cope. I recently had a meeting with the infrastructure team and an application has been made for an additional prep classroom to be built and be ready for the 2024 school year.
This week the school leadership team will begin the process of preparing for the next school year. During this period, we will be highlighting what our areas of improvement will be based on the data and feedback we have received this year. This process will develop a draft Annual Implementation Plan and an associated Explicit Improvement Agenda. Both documents serve a focus for the whole school community on the work we need to do to continually grow and improve as a school community.
Earlier this year as many of you may be aware, the use of mobile phones at school by students was banned. Already our school has in place a system for collecting phones at the beginning of the day. Students are asked to hand in mobile phones at the start of every day in Corporate Services (CS) and collect them before going home. Unfortunately, I have been made of aware of a number of students who are keeping their phones with them through the day. Please remind your children that if they are bringing a phone to school, to hand them in to CS, as any communication to students throughout day is managed by our wonderful admin staff.
I am looking forward to enjoying a productive and fun end of year with all the celebrations that occur.
Thank you for your support of the staff and your children throughout the year.
Have an amazing weekend.
David

Deputy Principal, Mrs Shiolan Ferrer
During Week 2, the school supported the 'Get Ready to Prep Program', where we had a great turn out by our parents. During this time, our parents were invited to listen to our PLD-Promoting Literacy Development, initiatives being embedded within our Early Prep-1 sector of schooling.
As a school, we are continuing to work around our Literacy Approach, with specific emphasis around the Explicit Teaching of Reading, through action research linked to the Science of Reading.
Developing and engaging our young students to speak about different topics, developing every day conversations, to more formal oral literacies, helps in the development of students being able to read and communicate their ideas.
Picking up a book, reading every day-even if it's just for a few minutes, makes a huge difference around students to process, understand, interpret and connect with texts.
Barna Jarjum Camp
During Week 3- we have a few of our Barna Jarjum student leaders and champions, attending the Quandamooka Camp.
This initiative, enables our senior First Nations students to connect with other Cluster Schools in embedding links with Culture, Country and People. There are over 100 students across our Redlands School Cluster, who will be participating in this camp, with our students, being able to experience connecting with our Elders from MMEIC, other peers and First Nations staff.
International Compassion Project-Stationery Donations
From Weeks 3-8, there will be a stand in Corporate Services, for any families wishing to donate un-used stationery items for our International Compassion Project. These stationery supplies will be distributed to either an orphanage or a low-socio economic school in the Philippines, where sometimes communities, do not have access to basic school supplies.
The gift of generosity for those in need, sometimes makes that difference for a young child!
Thanks everyone for you assistance and compassion.

Sports News, Mr Beasley & Mr Robinson
It has been an incredibly busy start to Term 4 and sporting excellence!
BayView had a record 3 students representing their family, school, district and region at the State Track & Field Championships. Dane competed in Long Jump, 100m and 200m sprints heats. Myles competed in the 100m and 200m heats. Dane and Myles were both part of the 4x100m relay, where they placed 4th, missing out on 3rd by .2 of a second! What an amazing race! Ellis competed in the 800m heats and also the 1500m. Ellis came 3rd in his timed final, with his time being the 6th fastest overall. This makes Ellis the 6th fastest 1500m runner in Queensland for his age group. Congratulations to the hard work, incredible attitude, determination and effort of these students who have trained to constantly improve in their respective disciplines.
In a blast from the past, former student Keilani has made the State team for the 1500m to compete at Nationals. Keilani won her timed final and qualified 3rd overall. This is a wonderful achievement and one that we can celebrate for Keilani and her family. Good luck at Nationals!
BayView has competed in our Cluster Tennis competition, with many of our athletes being completely new to the sport. BayView competed in red ball all the way up to full court/ green ball, winning lots of games along the way. Our students had wonderful manners and sportsmanship and on a hot, dry day, they competed hard right up until the final match. Mt Cotton finished the competition with the win, however we have a big group of keen new tennis players ready to fight for the trophy next year! BayView placed 3rd overall! Well done our Cluster Tennis Team.
Cricket Blast!
We have been extremely fortunate to have young coaches or up-and-coming platers from Queensland Cricket visit our school turn cricket clinics for our P-2 and MA students. Students aged 5-10 are welcome to sign up for the Thursday afternoon Cricket Blast clinic that will run for 6 weeks. It costs $99.00 and will include cricket gear and a ticket to see the Brisbane Heat! Info has been sent home with a note, sign up to secure a place!
Come Try It Day!
Good luck and best wishes to our Year 4 students heading to Cleveland Showgrounds for the annual Year 4 Come & Try it Day! This is a fun day of sportsmanship, playing games, working as a team and making new friends.

Classroom News
Prep Purple
Students are learning to write factual sentences about familiar animals. This week, we are focusing on sea animals, in particular octopuses. Prep Purple are doing a tremendous job writing their factual sentences about octopuses. They are strengthening their writing by referring to the animal specific WOW word lists, heart word list, and writing down the sounds they hear in words. They are also improving their use of capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
Some of the students had the opportunity to show Mr Cooke and other senior staff how well they are going at writing independently. Here are some examples of their incredible work.
