Deputy Principal, Mrs Ferrer

Indigenous Literacy Week

Indigenous National Literacy Day is held on September 6, 2023. This initiative focusses on celebrating Stories, Cultures and Languages.

BayView State School has celebrated this initiative by liaising with classes across P-6, to read books that links not only to local indigenous authors, but also to immerse in the reading of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander texts.

Please don’t hesitate to see our friendly Discovery Centre staff, around accessing some of our First Nation resource books to lend and read!

PLD-Promoting Literacy Development-Reading

Our staff in the early years sector have been developing further skills and strategies around PLD-Promoting Literacy Development.

This new introduction to a synthetic structured phonics program, has already shown great successes within our Prep cohort.

Our Prep Teachers, have also opened their practice for other staff and also our Cluster Principals, who have come along to watch and visit this work.

The next level of training for PLD has also started with our Teacher Aides and Inclusion Team, who have commenced a series of online learning modules.

Our Year 1 Teachers, are also beginning training in this space, with face to face professional development courses occurring for select staff.

For parents, interested in finding how to support their children in PLD, particularly in the areas of Early Literacy Development, don't hesitate to access the PLD forum. Similarly, every day skills such as reading a book and having conversations around a piece of text, is a simple way for students to engage in oral literacy development and later-readiness around learning to read.

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

The NDA is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative for schools, encouraging whole-school communities to work together to implement evidence-informed positive and proactive solutions to prevent and address bullying.

In 2022, 68% of Australian schools joined together to say Bullying. No Way! The NDA is an opportunity to create a shared understanding of what is bullying, outline your bullying prevention policies and show support to students who may be experiencing bullying.

The NDA theme for 2023 is 'growing connections'. This theme supports research findings that strong school community connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and help enable positive, help-seeking behaviours in students.

Qld Child Protection Week

Most of us recognise that child protection is key to ensuring that children in our communities, families and schools are safe, nurtured and protected.  Sometimes this means acknowledging that children are neglected or harmed in these same places.  That is hard to acknowledge.  As such, children continue to experience child abuse and neglect in our society.

In order to stop child abuse and neglect and ensure child protection in our society, we all need to play our part by assisting families who struggle and by speaking out about abuse when we see it or hear about it.  Often children tell us what is happening to them through either very clear statements or in subtle ways.  Our role as adults is to pay attention regardless of the way children tell us what is happening for them.  Another role we can play is in hearing parents when they say they are finding their role of parenting difficult and offer assistance.

When children speak out or adults speak out on behalf of children they need those involved in the wider child protection system to be well trained and available to pay attention to what they are saying.  This includes the Queensland Police Service, professionals such as Social Workers, Psychologists and Psychiatrists as well as Teachers who are often in the key position of being able to note difficulties for children and their families.  Family members and friends also play a crucial role in such disclosures in terms of hearing what is stated and offering support and friendship. When unable to offer such support or when such support isn’t accepted, family members and friends can contact community organisations of the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services to seek further assistance for the child/ren and family.

Who to contact

Child abuse and neglect only continues when those able to do something, do nothing.
