Community News
Principal, Mr David Cooke
Good afternoon BayView community!
How fast the term is tracking as we near the end of week 6. There have been so many great things happening here at BayView State School over the last three weeks.
Last Friday was a wonderful example of our community coming together to have BayView’s Biggest Morning Tea. Thank you to the many community members who joined us to have morning tea on the oval and a special thank you to the parents who offered me a small bite as I walked around. Events like this are a perfect example of what a school community is about. While our academic grades are important, the spirit and culture of a school is fostered through the connections we build outside the classroom with our peers our staff and the community as a whole. Be Inclusive is one of our four values and this was certainly evident through out the morning tea. As a result, I believe we have raised just under $1000 for the Cancer Council.
Once again, our Sport Aerobics teams participated with excellence at a competition on the weekend. While the overall results were exceptional with many 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings, what has certainly been on show is the support every student has shown each other and in fact other schools as they compete. I am looking forward to watching as many teams as I can at the Nationals being held on the coast in September. Well done to the teams and your coaches and a special thank you to Mrs Sabrina Tully for her huge amount of work in this space.
Last night I received an email from Mr Black who was very proud to inform me, that as of this year, the school has had a representative at every level of sport with the Queensland School Sport pathway. This year our first QLD rep Ellis has joined Libby Baggs (School team Swimming), Ciara Derham (District Rep Cross Country/Athletics) and Dyson Black (Metropolitan East Aquathlon). We are working with Mr Black to appropriately celebrate this whole school achievement.
Keeping with Mr Black, last year the P&C commissioned a Mural to celebrate the 13 years of his principalship here at BayView. Across this term the artist has been painting this mural and we are almost finished. The mural will be finished prior the end of this term and will be completed in time for Mr Black to see when he returns to the Redlands. Please see the progression photos below.
Sport forms a very important part of the culture of our school and we had a fantastic day at the most recent District Athletics trials. Thank you to Mr Beasley, Mr Robinson and many other staff and parents who contributed by training our students to the amazing results we achieved. As a school, we were equal 4th with Thornlands State School, with Mr Beasley putting them on notice for 2024. I am looking forward to the students trailing for the Met East team later this term and wish them the best of luck.
Music also is an integral part of education of a student. As I have said previously, learning this language helps engage the brain and contributes to a student’s ability to be a critical thinker and provides an opportunity for the students to express their artistic talents. Last Monday, our Junior and Senior bands participated in the Redlands Eisteddfod with both bands performing brilliantly. Unfortunately, I was unable to make their performances however I would like to congratulate our Junior Band who achieved a Highly Commended. Special congratulations to our Senior Band who performed so well they were awarded with second place. I would encourage all families to consider instrumental music as an exceptional value add to your child’s education and firmly believe we have two really great teachers in this space, Ms Cleary and Ms Taggart.
Tonight, the Matildas will play the English in the semi-final of the World Cup. The team is a wonderful example of how to play sport with dignity and passion and I hope they make the final, continuing our countries great female sports achievement in 2023.
Have a great weekend everyone and I look forward to the last four weeks of term 3.
David

Targeted Reading-Accountable Talk
As part of the school's strategic direction, staff have been working on professional development around the Science of Reading and ensuring that our students are engaging in effective reading practices.
Recently, some of our staff have been engaging in action-research around Accountable Talk.
For classroom talk to promote learning, it must be accountable.
Accountable Talk focusses on student-centred discussions where the student must support and defend their claims with evidence.
Accountable conversations allow students to process the lesson material much more deeply than teacher-centred talk.
By actively discussing specific topics and defending their ideas and opinions on these topics, students internalise the material in more authentic ways.
Some sentence stems to during dialogue include-
- I wonder why…
- I have a question about…
- I agree/disagree with…because…
- That reminds me of…
- I don’t understand…
- I predict…
- On page ____ it says______ so I think…
- ____ could you please clarify what you mean when you said_____
- I would like to add to what ___ was saying
- I had a different opinion to what ___ was saying because I thought _____
- I came to the conclusion ____ because
These sentence stems can be used at home, when forming conversations around given topics, and can be used as activities to openly discuss ideas when reading texts- be it a novel/story, piece of text, environmental print and simply offering ideas through talk.
Our Year 5 cohort have been working in this space and building their skills when reading with purpose and advocating ideas, through Accountable Talk!
Social Emotional Learning
BayView recently hosted the SER Social Emotional Learning & Wellbeing Workshop for various schools around the district. Work around social-emotional agency and links to PBL, were discussed. Throughout this time, connections with outside agencies have been created, in order to offer our families and students free access to regional support via areas linked to school engagement, behaviour, occupational therapy and the school psychologist.
Working together is key in ensuring the best possible outcomes for our students!

BRAINways Days of Excellence Program
Nomination letters and permission forms for the Semester 2 BRAINways Days of Excellence were sent home last week. Please ensure the permission form is returned to school no later than Monday 31 August. As spaces at BRAINways fill quickly, it is advisable to register your child online using the information contained in their Nomination Letter as soon as possible. The Chemistry and Philosophy based programs on offer this semester look very interesting, and I am sure our students will enjoy the hands-on nature of these engaging workshops.
What a busy and fun semester of Extension we have ahead!

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data
All schools in Australia are required to participate in the annual Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on school students with disability. The national data collection counts students who have been identified by a school team as receiving an adjustment to address a disability as defined under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the DDA).
The national data collection collects information about students who are receiving adjustments because of disability across Australia in a consistent, reliable and systematic way. This collection strengthens existing approaches to supporting students with disability and draws on evidence of the ongoing work of teachers and education staff throughout the year to provide personalised learning and support for students with disability. The information collected includes:
- the number of school students receiving an adjustment due to disability;
- the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students;
- the broad category of disability that the student best fits within.
Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. Schools provide this information to education authorities.
For additional information, please visit the site below.
Carmel College Year 7 transitions staff information session
Effective transition programs establish positive relationships between the students, parents and educators. Recently, Mrs Potter, one of our Inclusion teachers, had the opportunity to attend a Year 7 transition staff information session at Carmel College. At BayView, we work closely with our surrounding high schools to ensure successful transitions occur by building solid connections across settings and nurturing the confidence of our students to thrive in their future schooling years.
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
This year, the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) will be Friday 18 August. Students can wear orange sun safe clothing to show their support and help raise awareness about bullying prevention. The NDA is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative for schools, encouraging whole-school communities to work together to implement evidence-informed positive and proactive solutions to prevent and address bullying. The NDA is an opportunity to create a shared understanding of what is bullying and show support to students who may be experiencing bullying. This year the NDA theme for 2023 is 'growing connections'. This theme supports research findings that strong school community connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and help enable positive, help-seeking behaviours in students.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
The focus for weeks 6 and 7 is 'Be Your Best Self' 'I will have a go at all activities' and 'I will allow others into my games.'

Year 1
In week 2 of this term, our Year 1 students had the opportunity to travel to Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre in Wynnum which included a trip on a boat by the name of 'Inspiration'. This unique experience had students partake in the role of a junior scientist for the day. Students shared questions and ideas in a variety of hands-on scientific investigations as they explored the Bay’s habitats and inhabitants. As a cohort, we were able to have rich discussions surrounding the impact humans have on the health of habitats. Some of these students had never been on a boat! We were incredibly proud of them overcoming their fears and having a great day out!
